Summary - Small Group Leadership Meeting - April 10th

Below is a summary of our last Small Group Leadership meeting held on April 10th. We had 19 people in attendance representing 10 of our 22 small groups.  

1. I shared my vision for small groups which can also be your own personal vision.  It is aligned with the great commission that Jesus has given to us - to make disciples and be fruitful.  We can do that by recognizing that we must reckon our selves dead to self and alive in Christ (Galatians 2:20) and continually be filled with and lead by the Holy Spirit as we seek to expand His kingdom. We desire to look like Jesus, act like Jesus and lead like Jesus.  I pointed out several spiritual disciplines (our part in the sanctification process) that we need to be incorporating into our lives to help us become more like Jesus ... see banner below the triangle.  There is also a partial list of scripture references that support this vision.   

2. We gave time for each table to think about, discuss and share answers to the following 3 questions:
a) Share one of two "good" things that are happening in your small group?
b) Share some things in your group that you think are "not so good" that may be frustrating you?
c) What suggestions do you have for me that I could do to help your groups function better or to help you become better leaders of a small group.

3. We introduced the idea of forming "pods" of 2 or 3 small groups working together, not only to encourage one another but to also work together as a team to do ministry and outreach together.  This idea was
well received.

4. We also brain stormed a number of ideas of what small group or small group pods could possibly do. Here is a list of some ideas - some are one shot events, some may be ongoing.

5. Pastor Jeff also provided us introductory teaching on a model of leadership - discussing Character (Who we are), Competency (what we can do well) and Influence (on those we interact with) and how Our Spirituality (In Christ) plays a vital role in all these other areas.

We learned that the small group leaders would like to meet approximately 3-4 times per year going forward to receive training / input and have a chance to share.

In the near future, I will be sending out a questionnaire to get further feedback and input from all the small groups so that we can firm up plans for September restart.

Paul' Mission and Attitude - Not Unlike A Typical Mother

One of my favourite characters in the Bible is Paul.  Perhaps it is because he was inspired to write much of the New Testament and actually lived what he taught and he kept doing what he was commissioned by Jesus to do until, like Jesus, he was killed.  Even though he suffered greatly, he kept on sharing the gospel (good news). He never seemed to be discouraged despite the hard work of breaking new ground and getting the message out to the Jews and the Gentiles.  In fact he seemed to rejoice when he was beaten or stoned or thrown into jail.  It was a privilege to be counted worthy to suffer for Christ.  Lord, I hope and pray that I might have this same attitude, especially if / when faced with opposition as I share God's message with others.

Once Paul knew what he was called to do and after he was filled with the Holy Spirit, he fervently, boldly and unashamedly began to preach the good news about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and salvation through Him every where He went.  The Bible says He went to the Synagogue each Sabbath day (since he was Jewish) and there he had a built-in audience of people to hear the good news when ever he was given the chance to speak. Often someone was healed by him or signs and wonders occurred which attracted many others to be interested in hearing his message. This made the religious leaders angry and jealous. They saw how they would lose control over the people and ultimately their power and position if everyone began to follow Paul's teaching and become part of The Way.  Paul taught truth about who Jesus was and why He had to die for our sins and from the letters he wrote to the churches we learn how to live by faith in Christ Jesus.  Many responded to Paul's teaching and house churches or small groups were established everywhere he went.  It's amazing what Paul accomplished for the kingdom of God.

Paul had many followers who wanted to be with him and help him in his work and also support him. I know that if I was living during that time period and in that region and became a believer back then, I also would want to follow and work with a man like Paul. I say that because I see the fruit of his ministry over an entire life time and ope that someday my life will bear much fruit like his did and that I also will hear the words, "Well done my good and faithful servant" when we meet Jesus face to face. Thankfully, today we also have many Godly examples around us that we can also learn from and follow their example.

We see in Paul's life the fruit of the Holy Spirit - love, joy, peace patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control -Galatians 5:22. You can also see how he loved and cared for people and encouraged others to live a life of love. He taught us how to live IN Christ and reckon ourselves dead so that others would see Christ in us. He puts in us a desire to pursue Christ and know Him intimately because that was his desire and goal - to know Him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death. (Philippians 3:10,11) Paul accomplished his goal and he discipled many who also were encouraged to disciple many others. We are followers today because of what Paul did back almost 2000 years ago.

There is so much to say about Paul and learn from Paul! You must read about his life in Acts and read his many letters to the church and individuals like Timothy and Titus. Imagine being personally discipled by Paul like Timothy, Silas, Barnabas, and hundreds of others (see Romans 16 for a short list). And yet we can also be discipled and learn from Paul's teachings by reading, studying and meditating on His Word and putting it into practice.

Sometimes we may get discouraged because we think we could never be like Paul or Peter or some other "spiritual giant"... but we can become what God wants us to be in Christ. We are all called to serve Him and grow in Him. I am encouraged by the many around me who I see living for Christ and being the hands and feet of Christ as they serve their families, give of themselves sacrificially (both time and resources) to ministry, serving and helping others, praying for one another, loving one another, showing hospitality, leading and teaching others, and the list goes on.  We have many great examples of godly lives being lived out before us.

Being Mother's Day this weekend, I also want to give thanks and praise to God for all the mothers who sacrificially serve and care for and love their families 24 / 7! I know as a Dad, I have tended to be more selfish (I know selfishness is sin!) with my time and less sacrificial than my wife and other mothers. I know most dads can't do all the things that moms do and continue to do for our families. Thankfully, all Dads are not that way and thankfully I am personally doing a little bit better at being a grand dad! Thank you Moms for your Christ-likeness in the area of mothering, managing the home and for all you do sacrificially.  You are amazing! I don't know how you do all that you do! Even Paul would have learned a few things from mothers - come to think of it, he probably did.  May God bless you and reward you for the blessing you are to your family and others.  Well done!  

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 11:1 "Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ." Jesus says, "Follow me." Let's all follow and remain in Him, obtaining what we need from God as we obey His Spirit and Word and continue to love one another ... as the greatest gift that we have is love.

The Promised Gift of God To Us (All)

This week we are looking at the Early Church and reading Acts 1-10,12.  I started this blog entry while away on vacation but realized I shouldn't really send it out until now, otherwise I would be ahead of where we are in our sermon series.  While away I had a chance to read through the recommended chapters of Acts twice and since being home I've also read the same passages again in "The Story" Bible which many have a copy of. Each time I read these passages I get excited! The promised Holy Spirit was poured out on Jesus' followers! My prayer is that we see this same Holy Spirit power operating within in our lives and our church body.

I make the practice of underlining key words and phrases that begin to pop out as I read the Bible.  I also underline promises and commands and those things we can expect to happen when we believe and / or obey the word.  Consequently my Bible has lots of marks on it, especially in the book of Acts after reading it again several times! Underlining also helps me to remember His Word and find things more easily.  

The early church started and continued to grow as a result of the promised "gift" - the gift of His Holy Spirit. Jesus gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.  For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit".  Acts 1:4,5

Jesus also said, "... But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8

When Jesus ascended, the disciples (120 followers in all) gathered together and prayed and waited for the promised gift. On the day of Pentecost (10 days after Jesus ascended to heaven), the place shook and "They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."  Acts 2:3,4  They were declaring the wonders of God as prophesied.  "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people..." Acts 2:17

Peter preaches his first sermon ... the resurrection of the Christ who died for our sins.  "God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.  Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what what you now see and hear." Acts 2:32,33 ... keep reading ... Peter says ... "Repent and be baptized, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off  (you and I too! ) - for all whom the Lord our God will call"  Acts 2:28,39 They accepted Peter's good news message and 3000 get added to the church that day! Acts 2:41

Peter heals a cripple in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. A crowd gathers and Peter gets to preach again proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.  "Many who heard the message believed and the number of men grew to about 5000." Acts 4:4

When Peter was questioned by the high priest who asked him "By what power or what name did you do this? (i.e. heal the cripple?)  Peter, recognized as an unschooled, ordinary man by those who knew him, but now, filled with the Holy Spirit and courage, He responds and again shares the gospel, ...  "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." Acts 4:13.  

Peter and John were told by the chief priest not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.  They responded, "we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard." Acts 4:20. Everyone was praising the Lord and they gathered and prayed and the place where they were meeting was shaken.  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly."  Acts 4:31

Miraculous signs and wonders were performed among the people.  Crowds gathered, the sick were brought and all of them were healed.  They are persecuted.  They are put in jail.  An angel of the Lord gets them out and they are told to keep telling the people the full message of this new life (in Christ). "The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree.  God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Saviour that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.  We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him." Acts 5:32

"They never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ."  Acts 5:42  So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith." Acts 6:7

Now we read the story of Stephen, the first martyr who was stoned to death.  Notice he was actually an ordinary, committed follower like you and I but filled with the Holy Spirit, like you and I can be.  He is described as a man full of God's grace and power, and one who did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. Acts 6:8 His opposition, the high priests of the Sanhedrin could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by which Stephen spoke.  Acts 6:10

Philip was another follower like you and I, who was filled with Holy Spirit and did miraculous signs and healings and we see how he was obedient to the Spirit's leading and how he effectively shares the gospel with someone who was seeking God.

We then learn about Sauls' conversion how Jesus appears to him and confronts him on the road to Dasmacus and choses him to be his apostle to carry his name to the Gentiles and their kings. Paul was also filled with the Holy Spirit.  After spending several days with the disciples in Damascus he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. 

The next scene we see, in Acts 10, is that Peter is called to minister to a Gentile named Cornelius. Peter shares the gospel with him (see Acts 10:34 - 43) and while he was still speaking the Holy Spirit is poured out on all who were hearing the message. Gentiles also receive the Holy Spirit!  Finally! Yeh!

Do you get the picture?  As a believer in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord we have also been given the promised gift of the Holy Spirit.  When we are obedient to Him and desire to share the good news with others, he gives us wisdom and boldness and courage so that what we can share with power.  People will be added to the kingdom of God.  People will repent and believe and also be filled with the Holy Spirit.  The message will continue to go forth and many will be saved. When others see our love, they will want what we have.  We need to be prepared to share your testimony and the good news of the gospel with others who are seeking.  

Let's be filled with the Holy Spirit.  Let's receive him in all his fullness by faith.  God has promised us the gift of His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit equips us with power, courage, boldness and wisdom to share the good news with others. Let's use the gift(s) He has given us. Let's not fear. As we go, in His name and authority, let's love one another, serve one another, love and serve our neighbours, and be prepared to tell our story of how we came to know Jesus as our Lord and Saviour and why Jesus means so much to us.

Let's let Jesus live his life in us by His Holy Spirit and as we abide in Him we too will see much fruit. Remember that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever and he has provided us with His power and authority and says that he will be with us always as we serve Him and demonstrate His love for others. He has given us the same Holy Spirit as was given to the 120 that were baptized with fire on the day of Pentecost!  Let's serve Him boldly! 

Jesus - Died, But Very Much Alive!

Jesus was crucified by the religious leaders of his day because he claimed to be the Son of God. When he died he became the perfect sacrificial Lamb of God to bear our sin, to pay our death penalty and to receive all of God's wrath for us.  "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16.

As prophesied, Jesus would die (for our sin) but would be victorious over death and on the third day he would rise from the dead. With resurrection power, God raised Jesus from the dead, allowing us to truly believe that he is the Son of God. Many saw Jesus after he rose. Many saw him return to His Father in heaven. He became the firstborn to rise from the dead. All of us who have repented of our sin and believe in Jesus as our Saviour and make him Lord of our lives and determine to follow him will also be resurrected and receive a new glorified body which will be like Jesus' glorified body when he appeared to his followers.

We have this as a promise. We have a hope. We have a future.  We will live forever with Jesus.  Some of us will die (physically) before Jesus returns again.  Some of us may not die and just be raptured when Jesus returns. Regardless, all believers will  given their new glorified bodies which will be like His when He returns and we will live with Him forever.

We need to make sure we include the resurrection as part of the gospel message.  Otherwise we do not have good news.  With out the resurrection we do not have proof that Jesus is the Son of God and that all of God's promises are true. 'For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ' - 2 Corinthians 1:20. The Word is truth. When we share the Word (Jesus is the Word) in the power of the Holy Spirit, it will not come back void.


We also have proof that He is alive because we know that He is living right inside of us. We are to make known to others "the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory." Colossians 1:27  His Holy Spirit which has been given to us leads us, guides us, encourages us, gives us words to speak, and works to do if we listen to Him and trust and obey. We are being transformed into His likeness - righteous, blameless, pure, holy and all the fruits of the spirit.  We have already received our deposit (the Holy Spirit) of our future inheritance. We have received a guarantee that one day we will be resurrected or raptured and live with Him forever. (see Ephesians 1) While we are waiting here for His return and being equipped and serving Him with the gifts and talents He has provided us, He is pouring out His grace and love and every spiritual blessing in Christ on us. He is providing all that we need to have an impact in this world and for His Kingdom to expand.

I would encourage you to study Paul's life and message just as you should study Jesus' life and message. I believe Paul's life verse might have been Philippians 3:10,11 which says, "I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so attain somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead."  Paul also says, "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ." 1 Corinthians 11:1

The next time you read through the New Testament mark the times you see references to the resurrection. It is key to what we believe and our gospel message. It is our hope and a hope that is sure! Christ is risen from the dead!  He is alive!  He is sitting at the right hand of Our Heavenly Father. He is ruler over everything.  He is interceding on our behalf all the time. He loves you and all those that you know that don't know Him yet. He wants them to hear the good news. Pray for them without ceasing.  He wants them to become part of His family and receive the same inheritance that we receive - eternal life with Christ and a new, glorified body like Christ.

By the way, on the last page of our Bible, Jesus Christ says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Revelation 22:21  He actually says it 3 times in Revelation 22 so you can be assured that he means what he says.  Whose side will you be on when He comes?







   

Jesus - Forsaken by His Father (for an hour)

In The Story we are now reading Matthew 26-27: Mark 14-15; Luke 22-23; John 7-8; 11-12.

In many ways this is a part of The Story in the Bible that I both love and hate as we discover what happens to Jesus in his final hours. Like the "Christmas" story, most of us have heard or read the "Easter - Good Friday" story a number of times. Unless you truly understand, there is nothing really "good" about Good Friday when you hear of how Jesus was treated.

I hate the way they treated Jesus on that day. I don't know how he actually endured all that he went through in those dark hours and they were all dark - emotionally, physically and spiritually. None of us have and will probably never experience what Jesus went through in his last hours.

How would you feel when one of your hand picked disciples, Judas, betrays you? I know he knew ahead of time that this would happen, but its still must have hurt!

What about when Jesus was praying in the garden. He knows that he is going to have to suffer and die. He wishes that he didn't have to go through with it. He asks three times to have this "cup" taken away and finally he gives into God's plan for his life and says "Thy will be done!" Meanwhile his disciples who were ask to pray for and support him can't even stay awake during one of his darkest hours.

What about when his # 1 disciple, Peter, who has followed Him whole-heartedly for 3 years and says that he is willing to die for Him, actually denies him and that he even knows him 3 times! Jesus knew that Peter would do this but just the same, it must have hurt and deeply saddened Jesus.

What about the hour when he is standing before the High Priest, who should have recognized Jesus for who he really was - the Son of God, the Messiah - condemns him to death for committing blasphemy. Jesus was telling the truth that he was the Son of God but they didn't want to believe him.

What about when he was beaten, spat upon and crowned with a crown of thorns and mocked.

What about when he was scourged so badly that he was unrecognizable.

What about when they actually nailed his hands and feet to a cross.

These were all difficult hours but the most difficult hour was the 9th hour when Jesus cries out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Up to this point, God has always been with His son. The Father was in Jesus and Jesus was in the Father.  Jesus only did what the Father was doing. He only said what the Father was saying. He and the Father had always been one.

During Jesus' darkest hour, God in essence left him or abandoned him entirely during a time when he needed his Father the most. Jesus was bearing all our sin and the sin of the world on that cross at that hour. (2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 Peter 2:24) Because God is Holy and His eyes are too pure, He can not even look upon evil or be in the presence of sin (Habakkuk 1:13) God in essence had to turn His back on His Son. Jesus paid the penalty for our sins. He became the sacrificial Lamb of God that was slain to satisfy God's wrath. His shed blood pays the price for our sin. We are no longer guilty. We are justified and declared righteous in God's sight.    

Fortunately, because of Jesus Christ, Emmanuel (God with us), we can now truly thank God for His promise, "I will never leave thee or forsake thee". (Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:5, Hebrews 11:5). Jesus also says to us, "I will be with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:20)  We can have full assurance.

We will never, ever be forsaken by our Heavenly Father like Jesus was during his darkest hour. Because of what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross, when we confess our sin and repent, when we believe in Him and Son of God, our sins are forgiven and we are made whole and Holy in Christ. By faith, we are on the road to becoming more and more like Jesus (sanctification) and we also secure the promise of eternal life and of receiving our new glorified body when He returns and / or takes us home.

As you celebrate Easter and "Great Friday", reread the story again and remember what Jesus did for you - John 3:16 - during his darkest hour. Give Jesus thanks and praise. Express your love to Him. Love Him with everything you are and have. Follow Him. Become like Him and don't be ashamed of Him or ever deny Him.              

Jesus, Son of God. Is there any doubt?

"Who do you say that I am?" ...
This was a question Jesus asked Peter when others were still trying to figure out who He was.  Many saw Jesus as a good man, a great teacher, a prophet and someone who had unique powers to heal, do miracles and drive out demons.  Others wondered whether he was truly the Christ, the anointed one, the Messiah who was prophesied to come. Peter answered this question by saying Jesus is "The Christ of God".  Peter knew for sure that He was the anointed one, the Messiah even before he heard God speak from heaven that Jesus is God's Son, when Jesus was transfigured.

I, like Peter, have never doubted who Jesus is since being saved. I know He is God. He is God's Son. He is Lord of lords. He is King of kings.  He is I AM. I know because He forgave my sins (past, present, future) when I confessed them and repented many years ago.  I also know because the Bible tells me so and God's Word is true. The religious leaders of that day knew that only God can forgive sins.  Jesus said he can forgive sins.  He must be God incarnate, in the flesh. Praise God that I am forgiven and washed in the blood of the Lamb (Jesus) who died for us.

The mother of Jesus (Mary) was told by an angel that the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:35)

God himself spoke these words from heaven when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist: "This (Jesus) is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." (Matthew 4: 17, Luke 3:22)

John, one of Jesus' disciples wrote that Jesus was the Word who was with God in the beginning (John 1:1) and also says, "The Word became flesh and lived for a while among us.  We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

Jesus said to Nicodemus, "For God so loved the world that he (God) gave his one and only Son (Jesus), that whoever believes in him (Jesus) shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)  Jesus is God's Son!

The demons know who Jesus is.  When Jesus was healing the demon possessed man, the demons shouted,   "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God." (Mark 5:7)

When Jesus was transfigured on a mountain and was seen by three of his disciples,Peter, James and John, standing and talking with Moses and Elijah in His glorified body, God spoke from the cloud where they were standing saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.  Listen to him!" (Matt 17:5; Mark 9:7; Luke 9:35)

After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, Martha acknowledges that, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world. (John 11:27)

When Jesus was asked by the high priest when he was being tried the night before his crucifixion "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One (God)? Jesus responded saying, "I am and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven". (Mark 14:61,62) Jesus, Son of God, often referred to himself as Son of Man also.

When Jesus stood before Herod and Pilate they asked, "Are you then the Son of God?"  Jesus replied, "You are right in saying I am."  (Luke 22:66-71)

Only Jesus, the Son of God has the authority to forgive sins. If you don't know Him yet, you probably know that you are a sinner and need His forgiveness. Turn your life over to Him. Believe in Him. Pray to receive forgiveness and salvation. Then ... read His Word. Grow in Him. Talk to Him in prayer. As a new believer find someone to disciple or mentor you and help you to become more like Him (Jesus). The Holy Spirit will guide you and teach you as you go.  Walk in Him. Rest in Him. Trust Him. He is your help and protector and provider.    

If you already know Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, then there should be no doubt in your mind that He is the Son of God! What a privilege it is to be a child of God, sons and daughters in the God's family thanks to what Jesus, the Son of God, has done for us! One day we too will receive a glorified body and be with Jesus and our Father forever.We are looking forward to our future with Him but also enjoying serving Him while we live in this world. Thank you Jesus for sending us your Holy Spirit to live Your life in us. (Galatians 2:20)

Jesus - WOW!

If you have been following along in The Story, we are covering the chapter "No Ordinary Man". If you have the time, find an hour where you can actually read the recommended passages of scripture.
Mattthew 5-7;  9;  14;  Mark 4-6;  Luke 10; 15;  John 6. 

There are a lot of things happening in these chapters. I am sure most of you have read the gospels before ... perhaps several times and you might be saying I know these stories. So you may have a tendency to simply skim over them.  This time when you read, don't just read them quickly. Let the Holy Spirit speak to you. Take out your pen or pencil and underline words and phrase that pop out at you. Record what He is saying to you personally. The Word is alive and fresh and is used by the Holy Spirit to encourage you, challenge you, convict you, increase your faith, motivate you to action ... you know what I mean! There are 100's of lessons in these pages. God wants us to put his word into practice so that we can be used by Him to advance His kingdom.

I love the sermon on the mount in Matthew 5-7.  By reading it one night over 37 years ago, I was convicted of my sin and cried out saying I am sorry, I am sorry, I am sorry for over an hour.  Later in Matthew 9:9, Jesus spoke to me and said "Follow Me". I said "Yes" that night and I have never turned back even though some said that "this" would never last.  They were wrong!  I later learned that I was saved and would have eternal life. I couldn't get enough of the Word. I devoured it. It was food that I had been starving for. Now I know that Jesus is the Word. He also says He is the Bread of Life.  He is Living Water. He is the Resurrection and the Life.  etc. I know for sure where I will spend eternity and I want to serve Him and make disciples wherever I am working or going.  Matthew 28:18-20

Enough about what He has done for me. You all have similar stories about how you came to know Jesus as your personal Saviour and Lord. Look for opportunities to share your story with others. Ask God each day for opportunities to connect with others who need a Saviour which may mean getting out of your comfort zone or may mean just being obedient to the Holy Spirit. Only you know your story. Tell it when given the opportunity. Build relationships. Ask questions. Let them tell their story and talk about themselves.  Listen. They will probably ask you about yourselves. Speak! Be lead by the Holy Spirit. Be filled with the Holy Spirit. Walk in the Spirit. Abide in Him. Trust Him to give you the words to speak and obey! He desires to reach those around you wherever you are.

Jesus often taught using parables which are sometimes hard to understand. The Holy Spirit can teach you their meaning. Simply ask Him. He will give you insights and His thoughts. Meditate on the passage and ask Him to show you what it means. You can also look in commentaries to see what the Holy Spirit has taught others if needed.

Read the parable of the Sower again. (Mark 4) One of the first messages I preached at the Salvation Army Lighthouse in Toronto was on this parable and the various soils. I brought in various soils in pots to illustrate my point. By the way, as believers we need to be careful about the weeds and thorns that can grow up in our garden ... if you know what I mean!  Dig them out by the roots when necessary!

I also love the parable of the "prodigal son". You may also have prodigals within your family and extended families. Most families do. Don't give up hope! Don't give up praying for them! God is still working on them. Love them! Be ready to welcome them home with open arms! Be ready to rejoice and celebrate with all the angels in heaven when they come home!  

In the rest of the readings you will see how Jesus calms the storm, walks on water, drives out a legion of demons, resurrects a young girl who has "fallen asleep" (died), feeds 5000 men and their families with 5 loaves and 2 fishes.

These were all very amazing examples of Jesus' power and authority over nature, over demons and over life and even creation. Jesus also said when He left us that we would be doing even greater things than He with His authority and power and in His name. We have the privilege of sharing the Good News of the Kingdom of God and being used by the Holy Spirit to lead others to Christ, receiving forgiveness of their sin so that they can not only have the promise of eternal life but to also grow spiritually and become like Christ and eventually do the same as us ... make more disciples.

Let's all experience the joy of seeing prodigals come to the Lord and celebrate with the angels in heaven regularly. Let's party! Can't you just see (imagine) the Lord's big smile! Don't let the weeds and thorns of this world prevent you from being fruitful and seeing a great harvest of souls enter into His kingdom as you serve Him.  Let your faith increase. He wants to use you and me for His purposes. May He bless us and help us to be fruitful - 30, 60, 100 fold!
